Thrilling October ahead

Posted by Dawn Dalton on 1:44 PM

Out of all the holidays, Halloween is my favorite. More than Easter (despite Cadbury Mini Eggs), and even more than Christmas.

Ironically (or perhaps perfectly), I found an ideal thrill-seeking match in my husband. Over the past three years, we've collected a spooktacular bounty of creepy decor and have fast become the most haunted (and fun) house on the block.

But this year, we moved out to the country, and our fully-fenced yard isn't the most welcoming for the local youth.

So we're moving our display to the community hall, where we're setting up a haunted house guaranteed to raise the hair on your arms.

October 31 seems like the distant future, even though we've started sorting through the many, many, boxes of skeletons in our closets. (Handy hubby made a COFFIN last year...out of which he jumped to give the older kids on our street a more rewarding thrill. Some of their screams still haunt my dreams. Mwahahaha.)

Lucky for me, I've got a lot going on this October to prevent me from going too Halloween stir-crazy before the big event.

IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN CHARLIE BROWN
Starting this weekend, with the Smoky Lake Pumpkin Festival. A new-found addiction with Pinterest has introduced me to all kinds of pumpkin-inspired decor, recipes, and craft projects. Our family Halloween outdoor theme is skeletons, but my interior design will be all about pumpkins. I plan to stock up at the annual festival.

Not to mention hang out with Kevin and Gwen, the owners of the world's first Jet Engine Funny Car to run 100% on canola biodiesel.

The second book in my Chase Duffy series for elementary kids, Gotta Jet, is all about this amazing machine.

Looking for the first in the series, Fields of Home? You can find it here. Gotta Jet launches January 2012.

MEET ME AT THE CROSSROADS
October is also host to my first ever blog tour. I'm thrilled to be on the virtual road with some incredibly talented authors of YA paranorm including Rachel Vincent, Lucienne Diver, Linda Joy Singleton, Judith Graves, Kiki Hamilton...and more!

For the full list of participating authors and bloggers on the Crossroads Blog Tour, head over to the main page and follow CrossroadsBT on Twitter.

Opportunities to win great swag, including BOOKS from participating authors. Oh my!

LEAPING INTO THE SPIRIT
Also this October...the launch of Spirited, an anthology of 13 ghostly stories by young adult authors the likes of Shannon Delaney, Maria Snyder, Candace Havens and much more! Two of my stories made it into the anthology, THREAD OF THE PAST, and DEATH WARRANT, a short story I co-wrote with Judith Graves based on a character from the Most-Wanted Monsters fiction series we've been furiously writing. The best part? Leap Books is donating all proceeds from the sale of this book to 826 National, an organization committed to youth literacy.

Spirited launches October 31, 2011 in e-book format, and in print in March 2012. Can't wait? You can pre-order it here. Follow Spirited on Twitter at Spirited13.

And just because I can't get enough, you can check out the trailer for Spirited below:

Isn't it pretty?

That's my October and it's looking pretty hot. What's on tap for you this fall?

Oh, I do love October. It's such a changeable month and I've always enjoyed Halloween (I'm not a bit dresser-upper but I love the decorations and the costumes!). And The Crossroads blog tour is fun -- I love visiting all the blogs and reading what authors have to say. Plus, what an awesome name for a tour, right?
